Surface topology and functionality of freeform microlens arrays

چکیده
Nonsymmetric (also known as freeform) optical components have attracted a great deal of academic and industrial attention due to the substantial benefits they demonstrated in imaging nonimaging systems. Additionally, freeform microlens arrays (FMLAs) are very promising with regard growing demand for device miniaturization cost reduction. As flip side, FMLAs entail specific challenges design, manufacturing, characterization. Here we report on latter present an innovative characterization strategy that makes it possible assess quality quickly accurately. The precisely measured surface topology was accurately represented using nonuniform rational basis-spline (NURBS) its response predicted by means ray-tracing simulations. We show reliably topology, results excellent agreement experimental measurements. also that, compared previous studies, illuminance levels displayed logarithmic scale more adequate low light represent closer match nonlinear human visual perception. believe method presented here will contribute speeding up FMLA manufacturing process, one current downsides this technology.

‡Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, 600 Mountain Avenue, Murray Hill, NJ 07974, USA E-mail: [email protected] Microlenses are important optical components that image, detect, and couple light. But most synthetic microlenses have fixed position and shape once they are fabricated, so their possible range of tunability and complexity is rather limited. By comparison, biology provides many...
متن کاملPose Hashing with Microlens Arrays
We design and demonstrate a passive physical object whose appearance changes to give a discrete encoding of its pose. This object is created with a microlens array that is placed on top of a black and white pattern. When viewed from a particular viewpoint, the lenses appear black or white depending on the part of the pattern that each microlens projects towards that viewpoint. We introduce the ...
متن کاملStrain responsive concave and convex microlens arrays
We report the fabrication of single-component, strain responsive microlens arrays with real-time tunability. The concave lens array is fabricated by patterning hard oxide layer on a bidirectionally prestretched soft elastomer, polydimethylsiloxane PDMS followed by confined buckling upon release of the prestrain. The convex microlens array is replica molded from the concave lenses in PDMS. Due t...
متن کاملLarge Area Full Fill Factor Microlens Arrays
Production of microlens arrays using the resist reflow technique has been extensively reported1,2. Theses arrays have fill factors approaching 75% and in lensed systems the unlensed light introduces noise into the imaging system. N T Gordon, C L Jones and D Purdy3 reported a sophisticated techniques able to create full fill, however, this is expensive. Davies and McCormick4, using optical litho...
متن کاملHigh-resolution beam steering using microlens arrays.
Imaging or beam-steering systems employing a periodic array of microlenses or micromirrors suffer from diffraction problems resulting from the destructive interference of the beam segments produced by the array. Simple formulas are derived for beam steering with segmented apertures that do not suffer from diffraction problems because of the introduction of a moving linear phase shifter such as ...
